Global Energy Strategy in the UK pt 1

In two recent interviews — now available in back-to-back streaming video — World Energy Television CEO Richard Loomis discussed energy strategy in the United Kingdom with the UK Minister of State for Energy, Malcolm Wicks; and the Chairman for Renewable Energy, Prof. Ian Bryden.

In his interview, Minister Wicks fields questions concerning supply, the North Sea and the role of renewables. Further conversation includes UK plans for the oil majors and incentives for technology advanced companies to invest in renewables. The Minister also discusses renewable obligations, the advantages of high cost of oil and the UK’s efforts toward energy efficiency.

Focusing on renewables, Prof. Ian Bryden of the University of Edinburgh explains renewable targets for the UK as well as the renewable resources currently in use and being developed, including wave and tidal. He also elaborates on renewable devices being tested, the process to develop them commercially and the challenges and cost involved.

Renewable Energy – Evopod Tidal Stream Turbine – Shell Springboard Winner 2009

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evopod

Evopod is a unique patented design created and developed by Ocean Flow Energy Ltd in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Our aim is to generate renewable electricity from fast flowing tidal currents which incidentally you don’t find off our coast up here in Newcastle.

The concept has travelled from the test tank of Newcastle University to the Fabricators of our local town, North Shields and now we have a 1/10th scale model to be tested in our hands.

With support from Queens University Belfast the device travelled all the way from Newcastle to Portaferry in Northern Ireland, which is located on the shores of the Strangford Narrows. Strangford Lough has a highly energetic tide race and so is recognised as one of the main tidal hotspots in UK and Irish waters. The above video was made from footage taken by our staff from the first few days of testing on the Lough.

Evopod is a semi-submerged tidal turbine. It generates electricity when the tides flow through its blades which turn a generator housed in its cylindrical body. The benefits of our design and more information about our company in general can be found on our regularly updated website www.oceanflowenergy.com Please take a look.

Our tests are ongoing at Strangford and development is continuous. The device was generating electricity within a short time of installation and so we are very proud of it!

Repowering from renewable energy sources

A five year project to refit a 35m trimaran using a variety of renewable energy resources found in the marine environment. The objective of this project is to cut the cord completely from fossil fuels for all but long range voyages in excess of 500nm. Energy for house loads and propulsion will come from solar, wave, and wind power stored in LifePo batteries and over 32,000 squar feet of compressed air.
